Tempo Car Shelter Dates in Montreal: When You Can Install and When It Must Come Down (2026-2027 Season)

When are you allowed to put up your car shelter? It depends on your borough, and the dates vary more than you'd think. Here are the permitted periods for a Tempo shelter (also called a winter car shelter, temporary carport or simply a "tempo") in the areas we serve, verified with each city in September 2026.
Why the dates matter
Outside the permitted period, the entire shelter must come down: the cover AND the metal frame. A shelter left up too early or too late means a fine that can run from $250 to $1,000 depending on the city. And no, removing just the cover isn't enough in most boroughs.

Two things worth knowing
Anjou opens later. The frame alone is tolerated from October 15, but the cover is only allowed from November 1. We therefore schedule full installations in Anjou starting November 1.
Saint-Léonard and Repentigny follow Thanksgiving. The date changes every year. In 2027, Thanksgiving falls on October 11: Repentigny opens on the 8th and Saint-Léonard on the 9th.

In Ahuntsic, shelters are prohibited in heritage sectors (the old Sault-au-Récollet village, Gouin Boulevard between Saint-Charles and J.-J.-Gagnier, and de l'Île-de-la-Visitation, du Pont and du Pressoir streets).
Rules that apply almost everywhere
- One shelter per lot in most boroughs (two in Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles, one per driveway entrance in Terrebonne and Repentigny).
- Maximum height of 3 m in general (3.5 m in Saint-Léonard, 4 m in RDP–PAT).
- White translucent cover and a removable metal frame.
- Distance from the sidewalk: 30 cm to 1 m depending on the area, plus 1.5 m from any fire hydrant.
- The shelter is for sheltering a car, not for storage.
These rules can change; when in doubt, 311 or your borough's permit counter has the final word.
